EARTH REPORT ON THE SCRAMBLE FOR THE ARCTIC
Half the Arctic’s summer ice may have melted by the end of the century which could open up access to a quarter of the world’s oil and gas resources, as well as the fabled North-West passage to shipping. The countries of the region are all vying to share this bounty. But increasingly, scientific evidence indicates that any benefits will come at a heavy price – both for the Arctic itself and in the impact on the rest of the world, as melting ice raises global sea levels and interferes with the functioning of the global ocean currents which influence climate.
Earth Report asks how the geopolitical scramble will impact on the Arctic wilderness.
Arctic Blues was broadcast on BBC World in June 2007. To order a DVD copy click here: Online tape or DVD orders or contact Dina Junkermann, TVE distribution manager: tel. +44 20 7901 8834; email: dina.junkermann@tve.org.uk
