On the eve of the first UN Summit on progress on the MDGs in New York in September 2005, two documentaries from Dutch broadcaster VPRO's Tegenlicht programmes explore the background to the MDGs. Noreena's agenda follows Noreena Hertz, anti-globalization campaigner and author of 'The Silent Takeover' and 'IOU, the debt trap and how to diffuse it', as she meetings with U2's Bono and Bob Geldof on the eve of the Live 8 concerts. 'Jeffrey's Policy' ("Jeffrey's aanpak: het einde van armoede?" ) features an extended interview with influential economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs, director of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's Millennium Project and head of of Columbia University's Earth Institute. The programme explores the ideas in Sachs' new book, 'The End of Poverty', and includes an interview with Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa.
