For Richer, For Poorer

Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva - 'Lula' to his compatriots - was finally elected Brazilian president in 2002, after four previous attempts. Lula da Silva The first president to have emerged from the Brazilian workers' party, Lula promised Brazilians that meeting the Millennium Development Goals to cut absolute poverty, ensure education and equality for all Brazilian children, and create a more equal society would be his Number One priority.

But inequality has been embedded in Brazil's economy for centuries - the result of conquest, colonialism, bad government and debt.Sao Paulo Skyline The gulf between the rich and the poor is one of the biggest in the world. In a population of 184 million, almost half Brazil's wealth is still concentrated in the hands of just 20,000 families. Nestling between the fabulous sky scrapers and modernist department stores in Sao Paulo, Brazil's biggest city and the business hub of the country, are the favelas or urban slums housing the poor.

Filmed in favela Coliseu, in the heart of one of the richest parts of Sao Paolo, this Life programme explores just what progress Lula's government has succeeded in making on delivering its promises to the poor.
