'The MDGs in Focus' project includes a package of television,
DVD/video programmes and internet resources, produced in partnership with European and non-OECD broadcasters and producers and designed to increase interest in, and understanding of, international development priorities in general - and of the Millennium Development Goals in particular.
The programmes are aimed at three main audiences - mainstream television viewers; the 16-24 year old, MTV 'youth' audience; and educators, NGOs, civil society groups and other multipliers in Europe. The goal is to provide a package of resources that can encourage dialogue and debate about how the international community works with the developing world to achieve the MDGs in a world increasingly polarised and distracted by tensions resulting from the war against terrorism.
Programmes in 'The MDGs in Focus' address the development issues underlying each of the eight MDG goals. Ongoing European coverage of MDG issues is also encouraged through a new international 'MDG award' presented each year at the One World Media Awards in London.
"We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals - worldwide and in most, or even all, individual countries - but only if we break with business as usual. We cannot win overnight. Success will require sustained action across the entire decade between now and the deadline. It takes time to train the teachers, nurses and engineers; to build the roads, schools and hospitals; to grow the small and large businesses able to create the jobs and income needed. So we must start now. And we must more than double global development assistance over the next few years. Nothing less will help to achieve the Goals."
